UK School Hires Robot As Assistant Headmaster

Will robots actually take over the world?

In a surprising turn of events, a school in the United Kingdom has taken a unique step by appointing an AI robot as its “principal headteacher”. Cottesmore School, situated in West Sussex, partnered with an artificial intelligence developer to create Abigail Bailey, the robotic headteacher, with the specific aim of assisting the school’s headmaster.

Tom Rogerson, the headmaster of Cottesmore, explained to The Telegraph that he utilizes the robot to seek guidance on a wide range of matters, from supporting fellow staff members to assisting students with ADHD and formulating school policies. The technology functions in a manner reminiscent of ChatGPT, the online AI service where users input questions, and the chatbot’s algorithms provide answers.

According to Mr. Rogerson, this AI principal has been meticulously designed with a deep understanding of machine learning and educational management, coupled with the capability to process and analyze extensive data sets.

Mr. Rogerson shared his thoughts with The Telegraph, stating, “Sometimes having someone or something there to help you is a very calming influence. It’s nice to think that someone who is unbelievably well trained is there to help you make decisions.

It doesn’t mean you don’t also seek counsel from humans. Of course you do. It’s just very calming and reassuring knowing that you don’t have to call anybody up, bother someone, or wait around for an answer.”

Mr. Rogerson concluded, “Being a school leader, a headmaster, is a very lonely job. Of course we have head teacher’s groups, but just having somebody or something on tap that can help you in this lonely place is very reassuring.”
