A recent study by the Global Mind Project has shed light on the profound effect of the pandemic on worldwide mental health.

Drawing from survey responses of more than 400,000 individuals across 71 countries, the “Mental State of the World” report documents a downturn in mental wellbeing since 2020. According to the 2023 rankings, the Dominican Republic leads with the highest Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) score of 91, with Sri Lanka and Tanzania close behind, scoring 89 and 88, respectively.

On the other end of the spectrum, Uzbekistan recorded the lowest MHQ at 48, with the United Kingdom marginally higher at 49.

The data reveals a 14.3% gap in the Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) between the highest and lowest ranked countries, underscoring significant global disparities in mental wellbeing. The findings further show that regions such as English-speaking South Asia, Russian-speaking Central Asia, and Core Anglosphere countries predominantly occupy the lower third of the rankings. In contrast, countries in Latin America where Spanish is predominantly spoken are more frequently found in the upper half of the list, indicating regional variations in mental health outcomes.
