Monkey business unleashed 🐒
Chester Zoo celebrates the arrival of a rare Sulawesi crested macaque monkey, offering hope for species conservation.
The recent birth of this primate holds significant importance, as experts believe it could play a crucial role in protecting the species from extinction. Over the past three decades, the Sulawesi crested macaque population has drastically declined by approximately 80%.
In the wild, these primates face a multitude of threats, including habitat loss, illegal logging, encroachment of agricultural land, hunting, and the illicit pet trade. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as critically endangered, with fewer than 5,000 individuals remaining in their natural habitat on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
