Gen Z Wants People To Stop Using The Thumbs Up Emoji Because It’s Passive-Aggressive

What do you think about this? 🤔

Young people are urging everyone to stop using the ‘thumbs up’ emoji, calling it “passive aggressive” 👍

A Reddit user shared their frustration about the ‘thumbs up’ emoji, questioning its widespread use at their new job where Microsoft Teams is used for communication.

They explained: “Most people at work use the ‘thumbs up’ reaction all the time. I find it unsettling and prefer to use heart reactions or short replies like ‘Great!’ or ‘Thanks!’”

The post received mixed responses. Some agreed, saying it felt impersonal and passive-aggressive, especially for younger generations. One 24-year-old user noted the generational shift, saying, “For younger people, the thumbs up emoji is really passive aggressive”.

Others disagreed, finding the reaction perfectly acceptable. One commenter was confused about the hesitation, stating they used the thumbs up to mean ‘I agree’ or ‘ok’.
