Maltese tennis sensation, Francesca Curmi, has etched her name in history as the first player from Malta to compete in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) main draw in Palermo. The 21-year-old rising star showcased her exceptional talent at the 34 Palermo Open, marking her debut at this prestigious level.

Facing off against the formidable Cristina Bucsa, Curmi displayed her prowess on the court and came tantalizingly close to a remarkable victory. Dominating the match, she took a commanding lead of 5-3 in the decisive third set, with her maiden career Top 100 win seemingly within reach.

However, Bucsa demonstrated unwavering determination, mounting a comeback to narrowly escape with a hard-fought victory of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Nevertheless, Curmi’s performance reaffirmed Malta’s growing presence in international tennis.
