The Maltese government has declared the harvesting of sea urchins illegal, effective immediately. 🚫

This is part of the government’s efforts to restore the population of this endangered species, according to a statement released on Friday.

A two-year moratorium has been imposed, and those found in violation of this regulation will face fines. 💵

The study discovered that sea urchins in Maltese waters are on the verge of extinction. Sea urchins serve an important role in the maintenance of the marine ecosystem by ensuring the survival of 18 distinct fish species and limiting the spread of invading alien species 🌊
