Tributes Pour In For The Hero Firefighter Joseph Zammit

RIP Joseph Zammit 🕊

Joseph Zammit, a 48-year-old firefighter and father of two children, tragically lost his life shortly after responding to a call in Pembroke. It was around 6 pm when the Police were notified that assistance from the Civil Protection Department was required at St. Andrew’s Bay in Pembroke. The reason for the request was a report of hazardous waste in the area.

Shortly after the fire was contained and extinguished, Joseph Zammit experienced medical issues as a result of his exposure to the fumes. He received initial medical attention from his fellow Civil Protection members who were on-site. An ambulance and a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital were dispatched, and Joseph received immediate medical assistance upon their arrival. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Joseph passed away shortly thereafter.

Magistrate Victor Axiak has initiated an inquiry while the police investigation is ongoing.

In a Facebook post, the Civil Protection Department described Joseph as an “exemplary officer who served for many years.” They characterized this day as a somber one, not only for his family but also for his colleagues.
