The two young Maltese athletes, who will be running the 60 m distance, are expected to compete against athletics giants such as Marcel Jacobs and Polish star Ewa Swoboda. Jacobs currently holds the title for reigning champion after victory in Torun in 2021. He also holds the Olympic (100 m), World Indoor (60 m) and European outdoor titles (100 m).

Scicluna and Grillo qualified to this high-profile event after their victories on 60 m distance at the Winter Championships held in Marsa last February. Grillo claimed his victory in 6.89 s while Scicluna won in 7.58 s.

More than 600 athletes from 51 European countries are expected to compete in the refurbished Ataköy Arena between the 2nd and 5th of March 2023.
