Ed Sheeran Wins Copyright Case For Thinking Out Loud

After a copyright dispute, Ed Sheeran has been cleared of allegations that he used elements from Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” in his song “Thinking Out Loud.”

The US court ruled in Sheeran’s favor, stating that the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer actually owed money for copyright infringement. Sheeran had previously stated that he would quit his music career if found guilty, but can now continue his work.

Sheeran expressed his relief, saying, “It looks like I won’t have to retire from my day job after all,” but also expressed frustration that baseless claims like this can make it to court.

During the trial, a musicologist for Sheeran’s defense argued that the four-chord pattern used in the song was not unique to “Let’s Get It On,” and had been used in many songs prior to its release.
