Flights To Catania Cancelled Due To Ash From Mt. Etna

This past weekend, Mount Etna in Sicily erupted once more, cancelling numerous flights to and from Catania and turning the airport into “hell” as many of the aircraft were blanketed in black volcanic ash.

As a huge ash cloud enveloped the Italian island, it is estimated that 68 flights to and from Catania Airport were cancelled or diverted, and airspace in the area was shut down. And while Etna’s most recent major eruption occurred way back in 1992, Europe’s most active volcano has been erupting frequently ever since.

Flights to and from Catania resumed this morning at 9am, but warnings of delays were still issued… especially for airlines like Ryanair, who had a whopping total of 23 cancelled departures. Tourists were commenting on “pretty uncomfortable drives” around Sicily as volcanic sand and ash covered cars and houses all around the island.

The last thing many travellers would’ve wanted to hear, especially with strikes in France and Spain also having a significant impact on arrivals and departures across the continent.
