Malta’s largest historic fort, which has appeared in Game of Thrones and several blockbuster films, is being given a much-needed €1 million facelift.
Work has started to restore Fort Ricasoli, on the outskirts of Kalkara, to its former glory.
The first phase of the project will see the restoration of the fort’s crumbling gun emplacements which face the sea.
Malta’s culture minister Owen Bonnici said five areas, including the former chapel and Royal Navy barracks, will be restored over the next two years.
These shocking photos, captured by Kevin Abela from the DoI, show the terrible state of the heritage site.
Why is Fort Ricasoli important?
Fort Ricasoli helped to defend Malta during the Second World War and was partially destroyed during a German bombing raid in 1942.
After the war, the fort was commissioned as HMS Ricasoli and served as a Royal Navy barracks between 1947 and 1958.
In 1964, the Admiralty in London transferred control of the fort to the government of Malta.
More recently, the fort has served as a stunning film location for some of cinema’s most iconic movies.
Troy, Gladiator, The Devil’s Double, Agora and Assassin’s Creed were all shot at the 17th century fort.
Big names including Steven Spielberg, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Ridley Scott all praised Fort Ricasoli as an ideal place to make movies.
The first season of Game of Thrones used the fort to represent The Red Keep.
