On International Day of the Girl Child which is every year on the 11 October, girls demand a life free from gender-based violence, access to health, skills and recognition for all the challenges faced by girls all over the world.

Here in Malta, we do have our fair share of women and girls who are successful in their own right, and who should be of example to all the girls out there clearly showing that whenever you set your mind to achieve something, nothing should stop you from reaching your goal, and always aiming higher!

Ylenia is one half of our Breakfast Duo and apart from being one of Malta’s instantly recognisable Bongu’s Ylenia is also an Influencer on Instagram and also a successful promoter of healthy lifestyles, which ranges from healthy food to ideal ways how we should be taking care of our skin. Updates about the ever-adorable Max are a plus!
Sarah Zerafa
Sarah is the definition of Fashion Goals, and definitely one of our favourite fashion influencers. Sarah has many feathers in her cap, including featuring in Cosmopolitan! Recently she also launched PresetBubble – her very own website, with her own presets available so that even you can add a bit of your Sosa Magic to your Instagram Feed. You can also catch Sarah every Sunday as one of the Malta’s Got Talent Judges.
Christabelle Borg
If there is one young woman who is definitely a master at multi-tasking then that is definitely Christabelle. A singer, a songwriter, a Eurovision representative, a businesswoman, and a wife. At the Eurovision Song Contest, Christabelle sang ‘Taboo’ which was all about breaking the stigma which exists around the topic of mental health. She did this by also opening up about her personal experience and struggles. Christabelle is also the CEO of VC group, manages a hotel in Gozo, and is the creator and founder of Lil’Ville Childcare.
Taryn Mamo Cefai
You hear her EVERY DAY during Bay Drive, but Taryn has a career which goes from stage, to screen, to the airwaves. Many remember Taryn in the TV Hit Strada Stretta, and before that in Il-Klikka. Taryn also graced Malta’s stages in various theatrical productions including pantos, and she is also one of the Bay voices. Apart from that, Taryn is very active on social media, and she is an avid traveller, which led to her recently launched Travel Blog ‘Taryn’s Travels’.
Cami Appelgren
Environmental activist and Founder of Malta Clean up Camilla Appelgren, who has climate change and the environment, contested the MEP elections last year. Cami has single-handedly made it a point to protect Malta’s environment in all aspects, often reaching out to politicians to make sure things are seen to.

These are just a little sample of the role models which young women and girls have here in Malta, and when coupled with the likes of Malala Yousafzai, Michelle Obama, and Greta Thunberg, then really and truly there is simply no excuse about it.
To all the girls reading this today. It’s ok to dream, it’s ok to have big aspirations. Don’t let anyone spoil them for you. Pursue them, believe in yourself, and you will succed, after all…who run the world? – Girls!
