West Indies bowler Gabriel banned for four matches

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been banned for four one-day international matches.

Gabriel, 30, was accused of making an alleged homophobic slur during his team’s Test match defeat by England.

He accepted an International Cricket Council charge over comments he made to Joe Root during the third Test in St Lucia.

Television footage shared on social media showed the England captain appearing to respond to a remark from Gabriel.

In reply, Root told Gabriel: ‘Don’t use it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with being gay.’

The alleged comment was made by Gabriel during the third Test between West Indies and England.

West Indies host England in a five-match series starting on 20 February in Barbados.
