With over 7 Billion Views, YouTube has a new ‘Most-Viewed’ video!
Just to put that number into perspective, the world population is currently at around 7.8 Billion, so just imagine almost everyone on Earth watching this video once, and that is how many times it’s been seen! That is an astronomical amount of views for this video – which is a far cry from the big budgets some spend to create YouTube content!
Think about it, in 2012 Korean Pop singer PSY took the YouTube world by storm for his song Gangnam Style, which was the first ever YouTube video to hit 1 Billion views. Back then, everyone was mind-blown by that number, and now it’s 2020 and the highest viewed YouTube video has reached 7 times the amount of views!
This has dropped Despacito into second place in the YouTube Hierarchy of views, which was also a major pop-culture success. Just like Gangnam Style, Despacito was loved by some and despised by many, as it joined the rank of popularly annoying tracks. I’m starting to see a trend here…
Is it Beyonce? Is it Lady Gaga? Is it Freddie Mercury? Sorry guys, NO!
A simple video of a 10-year-old boy dancing to a nursery rhyme, and doing funny things with his fingers, is the most-viewed-doo-doo-doo-doo video on YouTube.
Interestingly enough, the original writer of the song remains unknown, and the song itself is actually public domain. Although, the trend was sparked by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine.
It has recently been re-released as a pandemic-inspired instructional video on how to “wash your hands, dodododododo”, and even that has already hit more than 26 million views! It seems like Baby Shark has really ingrained itself into pop culture history.
