Valletta’s reign as European Capital of Culture year has officially come to a close with a huge celebration and street party.
Thousands braved the cold weather on Saturday night to enjoy a spectacular show in Republic Street and St George’s Square.
The Big Dancers were back with their colourful puppets leading the way to the main stage.
The audience rocked to live performances from Tribali, the Brass House Unit, Ozzy Lino, DJ NeoX and the Moveo Dance Company.
The closing ceremony marked the end of a successful cultural year led by the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
More than 400 events were organised across Malta and Gozo in 2018, attracting audiences of around 400,000 people.
To celebrate being the European Capital of Culture, the Valletta 2018 Foundation worked with with more than 1,600 Maltese and international artists – from Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and more.
The open day at MUŻA, Valletta’s new National Museum of Art, was also a huge success with thousands of people visiting the museum for free throughout the day.
The colourful closing ceremony in St George’s Square joined the list of large events in the city organised by Valletta 2018, including the Official Opening, the Valletta Green Festival and the Valletta Pageant of the Seas, which together recorded an attendance of more than 350,000 people.
During 2018, more than 5,000 people attended a number of music-related events organised by Valletta 2018.
These included live concerts in genres ranging from jazz to classical to opera to hip hop, which took place in several towns in Malta and Gozo.
Valletta 2018 also held its very own opera season. Together, these three operas recorded an attendance of more than 4,700 people.
