WATCH: “This is a Very Good Way to End the Year” – European Commission Authorises Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine for European Use

Moments ago, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the Commission has authorised Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for use within the European Union.

President von der Leyen said that as she had declared before, the doses for all of the EU member states will leave Belgium in the coming days, and the rollout in all member states will begin at the same time, during the EU Vaccination Days, which start on the 27th December, which is the first day when Malta will be administer its first dosage to an IDU nurse at Mater Dei Hospital.

“This is a very good way to end this difficult year, and to finally start turning the page on COVID-19,” President von der Leyen said, adding that while this is the first vaccine, more will be approved soon, if they prove to be safe and effective, with the next one in line being the vaccine manufactured by Moderna.

Moreover, Ursula von der Leyen expressed her pride in the fact that the first vaccine to be approved by the EU is a true product of European innovation, as BioNtech has received some €9m of EU Research Funding to develop the groundbreaking technology which was used in the manufacturing process of this vaccine, as well as a €100m loan from the European Investment Bank in June, which is backed by the EU, to ensure it finalises a vaccine in a short period of time.
