Built in 1715 by the Knights of St John, Santa Marija Battery is a Grade 1 Protected Building due to its significant military architecture. After an extensive €183,000 restoration project, partly funded by the EU, Comino’s Santa Marija Battery was reopened today by Ministry for Tourism Julia Farrugia Portelli.
Farrugia Portelli said that the restoration of the battery as well as the recent restoration of the Santa Marija Tower are part of a vision which seeks to establish Comino not just as an island with the bluest of lagoons but also an island which boasts its own history.
Minister Farrugia Portelli also said that in 2019, 32% of all incoming tourists visited Comino – amounting to more than 870,000 tourists.
Farrugia Portelli also thanked and commended Din l-Art Helwa and all its members for their priceless work and dedication in safeguarding the heritage of the Maltese Islands such as the fortifications of Comino.
