No one was injured when part of the Fireworks Complex in Zurrieq blew up during a thunder and lightning storm which hit Malta earlier this afternoon.
A spokesperson for the Malta Police Force told Bay that lightning struck part of the complex with subsequently led to the explosion which was heard, and felt across many parts of Malta, as far as Birzebbugia. He also told us that thankfully, no one was in the complex when this happened.
This is not the first time that this complex was targeted by Lightning. In fact, The Times of Malta said that two men were killed on the same site on May 4, 1989 in another explosion caused by a lightning strike.
