Frida Kahlo’s legendary style, lust for life, men, women, politics and her Mexican heritage has made her a ubiquitous feminist icon and style muse to generations. But what do we know of her as an artist? Well, you can find out this weekend (on Friday and Sunday) at Eden Cinemas!
Eden Cinemas will be taking you on an up-close and intimate look at her works as the audience will examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life, men, women, politics and her cultural heritage.
But Eden Cinemas will not be stopping there. Local artist, Edward Schembri will be having an exclusive exhibition at the Eden Cinemas foyer prior to the screening. Ed is unique in how he applies paint to the canvas, it is his hands that are his most prized tools. The advantage of using such a raw tool is the proximity he can get to the painting, it’s a personal affair between artist and canvas, an everlasting connection.
Painting with his hands gives him the freedom to adjust the blends of colour to highlight the right angles and to ensure that the painting captures the true essence of the subject he is painting. Each layer produces a different intensity that brings together the human form resulting in an aesthetically and emotionally pleasing image of value.
His paintings always touch on the personal, it is plain to see the connection Ed has with his subjects, they are raw, honest, intimate and at times nostalgic.
Frida Kahlo was a prolific self-portraitist who used the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her vivid, turbulent, and, at times, tragic life. Guided by the artist’s own words this personal and intimate film offers privileged and detailed access to her work, shining a light on the artistic talent so often overlooked in accounts of her dramatic life.
Featuring interviews with world-renowned Kahlo curators, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in Frida Kahlo’s paintings. We examine her omnipresent self-portraits but also her less well-known works resulting in a feast of vibrancy and colour on-screen. Deeply moving and sometimes shocking, Frida’s paintings will take us on an engaging journey of discovery into the mind of one the most enduring and arguably the world’s favourite female artist of the 20th century.
Take a journey through the life of a true icon, discover her art, and uncover the truth behind her often turbulent life. Making use of the latest technology to deliver previously unimaginable quality, you will be taking an in-depth look at key works throughout her career. Get your tickets by CLICKING HERE.
