Several carcades were reported across Malta, with some people even setting off fireworks in certain localities, after the long-awaited tournament came to an end on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Less than two minutes into the game, celebratory shouts could be heard across houses, apartments, and pubs as Luke Shaw scored for England, which was recorded as the fastest ever goal in a European Championship final.
English fans were eager to see their team take home the trophy for the first time since the 1966 World Cup – but tensions went sky high when Italy scored a goal.
And of course, some memes had to spark out of this match too…with one of the most popular memes currently trending depicting Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini pulling down Bukayo Saka in the last minute of regulation time.
Meanwhile, the local police force was also advised to ‘treat Sunday like election day’, while closer to the time of the match, the Police Officer’s Union urged caution and responsibility.
At the time of writing, no injuries or major accidents linked to the game or post-match celebrations were recorded.
