UPDATE
Roberta Metsola has been unanimously voted in as First Vice President of the European Parliament. The announcement was given by EP President David Sassoli.
“Being elected Vice-President of the European Parliament is such an honour. It means a great deal and I will work hard to continue to build bridges between citizens and the European decision-making process,” Metsola said on Twitter.
Thank you everyone for your support.

Earlier:
Following the departure of MEP Mairead McGuinness, from the European Parliament, to take up the post of European Commissioner, plenary will elect a new Vice-President today.
Ms McGuinness (EPP, IE) stepped down as an MEP in October, leaving her post as First Vice-President of the European Parliament vacant. Today, MEPs will vote to elect her successor from candidates who had until Monday to express their interest in the position.
Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola has been nominated by the EPP Group as the new First Vice President and later on today, she will find out, as we all will, whether she will get the majority of votes, to join David Casa, as yet another Maltese person in one of the EU’s highest positions.
So proud. For a girl from an island in the middle of the Mediterranean, this is a big moment. Thank you @EPPGroup, I will not let you down. https://t.co/LPAWLd36Gm
