Malta’s health minister Chris Fearne said that a major incident had been declared.
Hospital bosses said that people were being asked not to attend the emergency department unless absolutely necessary.
Officers said that a number of children were involved in the accident, one of them just a toddler.
Meanwhile, Malta’s transport minister has denied claims that roadworks on the Mosta to Mgarr road were to blame for the collision.
Speaking at a business breakfast, Ian Borg urged motorists to take extra care on the roads.
He said: ‘I want to stress that none of the accidents reported this weekend were linked to ongoing roadworks.
‘My appeal is that everyone on the roads must be responsible.
‘We risk not just our own lives, but those of other drivers on the road.’
