Seven injured in blast at Malta fireworks factory

Three people have been rushed to hospital after a massive explosion at a fireworks factory near Naxxar.

Two men and a woman were seriously injured in the blast, which happened on Saturday afternoon.

Four others escaped with minor cuts and bruises and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Bay listeners reported that they heard a huge blast at around 3.15pm.

One said: ‘We were sunbathing on our roof in Qawra when we heard an almighty explosion.

‘It was so loud we all jumped up with fright. It was a big shock.’

A large plume of smoke was then spotted rising into the sky from as far away as St Paul’s Bay, San Gwann, Gharghur and Mosta.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in the countryside between Salina Bay and Burmarrad.

Police said at least two of the seven injured were being treated for serious injuries after being pulled from the rubble.

They include a 29-year-old woman from Mosta, a 25-year-old man from Dingli and a 36-year-old man from Naxxar.

One of those injured was Colin Muscat, pictured below.

Friends on social media described him as ‘Malta’s biggest fireworks enthusiast’ and wished him a speedy recovery.

The factory belongs to the 11 February Pyrotechnic Society, which makes fireworks for the Our Lady of Lourdes feast in San Gwann.

Police said an investigation into the cause of the explosion had been launched.
