A turtle that almost died after suffering a serious injury has been released back into the sea off Malta.
Tama was on the brink of death after a boat propeller chopped off a front flipper and slashed his head open.
But after four years of rest, recovery and rehabilitation, the turtle was freed into the sea at Riviera Bay by schoolchildren and members of a Maltese wildlife charity on Monday.
A spokesman told 89.7 Bay: ‘During the first eight months or so, Tama was fighting for his life.
‘Luckily, a missing front flipper isn’t as crucial to a male sea turtle as it is for a female and he began to adjust.’
Tama has also been fitted with a tracking device so that experts can keep an eye on his progress.
