A turtle was killed after it was probably hit by a boat at Ħondoq ir-Rummien. On Facebook, Profs. Alan Deidun, a maritime environmental expert, posted a photo of the turtle, known as a loggerhead turtle, with a dent in its shell.
Deidun went on to explain that the turtle was probably the victim of a boat or a jet ski, remarking that with the number of boats at sea, the natural home of turtles has become dangerous.
This is because turtles swim to the surface to observe the coast to pinpoint where they can come up to lay their eggs. Therefore, the turtle – which was likely searching for a place where it could nest – might have been hit unintentionally.
Deidun urges all those who are enjoying themselves out at sea to pay attention and protect the environment around us!
