Three-time Olympic gold medalist and Sliema water polo favourite Tibor Benedek sadly passed away last Thursday due to severe illness.
He was considered as one of the best water polo players worldwide.

The Hungarian player won multiple national and international titles, and also coached his country’s national team. He won gold medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic games.
“A role model, he was a true role model, both as a player and as a coach. A role model as a person. It is difficult … very difficult … We have suffered an irreplaceable loss. Tibi, I promise, we will continue the wonderful work you have started, to train and raise young athletes with the others! You will be in our hearts! Farewell, my friend!” wrote Attila Vári, president of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation in his commemoration.
“Rest in peace Tibi!! You were the one who invited me to the national team and I can thank you for being able to represent Hungary at the Olympics! Thank you for everything Coach! ” World Championship silver medalist and European champion Krisztián Manhercz said in a farewell.
