Dua Lipa has won her first awards at the Grammys.

The New Rules singer, 23, took home one of the top prizes of the night, for best new artist.

Accepting the award on stage, Dua said she was ‘honoured’ to be nominated alongside ‘incredible’ female artists, adding: ‘I guess this year we really stepped up.’

It was the second award of the night for the British singer, who earlier scooped best dance recording for Electricity.

Speaking backstage, Dua said: ‘Being in the new artist category and having so many female artists nominated is a big change.

‘It’s a change we want to see for many years to come, it’s a big difference from previous years, it only felt right because there were so many artists on there that I love and admire.’

It was also a big night for rap.

Drake surprised the music world when he turned up to accept the best rap song award for God’s Plan, while Childish Gambino made history by winning song of the year – the first time the award has gone to a hip-hop track.

Lady Gaga won the first award of the night scooping the prize for best pop duo/group performance for the song Shallow from the film A Star Is Born.

She also her speech to highlight the film’s mental health message, telling the audience: ‘If you see someone that’s hurting, don’t look away.’

Country music star Kacey Musgraves took home four prizes in total for Golden Hour, her critically-acclaimed third album.
