The United States is warning citizens not to travel to Malta as the numbers of COVID-19 cases continue to increase each day. With cases getting close to a total of 8000, the country has also been added to the US’ highest-risk category for travel.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also included Moldova and Sweden as countries to avoid travelling to in the category “Level 4: Covid-19 Very High” category. Countries are placed in this category when reaching more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents during the previous 28 days.
Malta was previously in Level 3 but moved to Level 4 after a national record of 1298 cases were reported yesterday by Health Authorities.
CDC said: “Because of the current situation in Malta, even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.” They also said that before travelling to Malta, one must make sure to be fully vaccinated.
