The Duke of Edinburgh celebrates his 98th birthday

The Duke of Edinburgh is celebrating his 98th birthday.

Buckingham Palace sent birthday wishes to Prince Philip to mark the occasion.

A message on the royal family’s official Twitter account said: ‘Wishing His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh a very Happy 98th Birthday today!’

Accompanying the message was a picture of Philip smiling while meeting members of the military.

Kensington Palace also sent its congratulations, accompanied by images of the Duke with the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and also with other members of the Royal Family at Trooping the Colour in 2016.

The Duke has been married to the Queen for more than 71 years.

In April, he became the third oldest royal in history, overtaking Princess Alice who was 97 years and 10 months when she died in 1981.

The Duke served in Malta with the Royal Navy during the Second World War, and was stationed in Malta on HMS Chequers until 1951.

The royal couple last visited Malta in 2015 for the Commonwealth summit in Valletta.

The Queen and Philip recently welcomed a new great-grandchild – their eighth – with the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
