Following a massive manhunt in Mellieha’s Mizieb woodland, a man was arrested by the police early on Friday.
According to the police, the man – named Aidan Bartolo of Ghaxaq – had been hiding for over six hours among the bushes. He was arrested just after midnight after initially escaping on foot after being chased by officers on Thursday afternoon.
Bartolo, a suspected drug trafficker, had also been involved in a shootout with the police. The incident took place at around 6:30 pm near the Mellieha bypass.
As the search was taking place, Police spokesperson Brandon Pisani revealed that the suspect realised he was being followed by officers when he drove his red Mazda Demio in their direction. Shots were fired. The suspect drove towards the Mizieb woodland, where he abandoned his vehicle and tried to escape on foot.
The shooting took place near a football pitch where a training session for youths was underway. Thankfully, no one was injured.
