Small Victories to Celebrate, Despite COVID-19

With cases still on the rise, people have been trying to make the best out of the pandemic. And evidently, social media has been overflowing with baking recipes, home workouts, book recommendations, and reminders to “use this time wisely”.

Now whilst I admire those who took the pandemic in their stride and used the time to kick ass, not everyone has – and that’s OKAY! Sometimes the biggest achievement is just getting by.

Even though some of these small wins might seem silly, sometimes even completing basic tasks brings a sense of achievement. And since it’s NEVER a wrong time to celebrate you, here are 7 things you should be patting yourself on the back for…

You brushed your teeth before lunchtime…

Whether you had to get out of bed and straight to work, or to attend online lectures, or are left unemployed… if you brushed your teeth without having anywhere to be, then collect 10 points and move on. You did great.

You had a shower

Okay, so some might think…how does one go without showering for more than 24 hours? Well, if you don’t have anywhere to be or run out of things to do, sometimes you start to consider – what’s the point?

But hey, we’ve all been there. So, if you’ve washed your hair and face – maybe even had an entire head-to-toe shower – then you’re doing good…Bonus points if you slapped on a face mask afterwards!

You spent time away from your phone

Let’s face it, many of us spend hours on bed scrolling through Instagram or TikTok for hours on end – and it’s hard to put down because there just isn’t much to do. But if you’ve had the willpower to put your phone down – to read a book, have a bath, organise your drawers, whatever – then you’ve just earned some serious points.

You completed a series

If this pandemic gave us anything, it’s a chance to catch up on our Netflix lists – and boy oh boy, have I taken that godsend of an opportunity. So, if you’ve binge-watched a show you’ve been meaning to get around to for AGES, then 10/10!

Oh, and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it. Especially if you binge-watched all of The Crown in 2 weeks. You’re a star.

You attempted a new skill

Living amidst a pandemic can get pretty boring, so people start to explore their capabilities. And if you’ve tried something new, even if it’s a recipe or something you simply didn’t stick with, way to go for getting out of your comfort zone!

You took a break from news

It’s only natural for us to want to remain up to date with what’s going on– but we only really need a certain extent of awareness. Knowing when you’ve had enough is CRUCIAL. So, if you’ve learned to limit your news intake for your sanity, then I see you, and I’m proud of you.

You’ve put on weight and you don’t feel guilty about it…

Listen, these things happen. And whilst some of us have become fitness gurus over 2020 (and kudos to you if you did), the majority of us have put on some weight. And that’s alright, especially in the middle of a pandemic where ordering takeout might bring you an ounce of joy. And if you managed not to feel guilty about it, then that is seriously a victory worth celebrating.

2020 has been a challenge in itself, so whether you organised your entire house or completed your Netflix list this year, you did good – so don’t be so hard on yourself.
