Malta Police have urged people to stay back from the rough sea after powerful waves claimed two lives within a matter of hours.
A woman drowned off the coast of Gozo after finding herself in difficulties.
Police said the 55-year-old from Germany was diving at il-Kantra near Mgarr ix-Xini when she was overwhelmed by the power of the waves on Tuesday morning.
Less than two hours earlier, the rough sea claimed the life of another victim.
Fisherman Rokku Bonnici, 85, drowned at Wied iż-Zurrieq after being dragged into the water by a freak wave.
Malta Police told 89.7 Bay they were called to the scene at 6.45am.
A friend of Mr Bonnici told The Times of Malta: ‘At least he died doing something we all know he loved, in a place he felt at home’.
