The annual crime report was compiled by criminologist Professor Saviour Formosa from the University of Malta.
It showed reported crime fell by seven per cent in 2018 – the biggest drop in nine years.
Professor Formosa said: ‘The year saw a major decrease in the number of crimes over the previous year, dropping by seven per cent, or 1211 crimes – amounting to a reduction of 101 crimes per month.’
He said Malta was still ‘a very safe place’ with serious crimes such as rape, murder, robbery, assault and sexual offences all well below the EU average.
Cases of theft, which account for almost half of all the offences reported to the police in Malta, fell by 46 per cent in the past year.
