‘Restaurant Bear’ Set Free After 20 Years Of Captivity

Historically “restaurant bears” are bears which were kept in small cages close to restaurants or hotels in order to attract tourists and onlookers.

The last ‘restaurant bear’ in Albania is a brown bear named Mark, who is 24 years old was saved last week, and on Friday he made it to his new home in Austria, “BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach.”

The animal rescue group Four Paws International was responsible for the staggering 44-hour long journey. The bear hadn’t stepped outside a cage in more than 20 years.

The non-profit group had launched a campaign in 2016 as a means to rescue more than 30 bears facing the same faith as Mark.

Mark will reside on 14,000 square meters of “natural surroundings” among three other grizzly bears who were all rescued.
