The loggerhead turtle had a fishing hook stuck in his throat and could barely eat or breathe.
Luca’s long journey to recovery started after he was rescued by volunteers from Nature Trust Malta and taken to their specialist hospital for sick turtles in Marsascala.
After almost eight months of expert treatment and rehabilitation, Luca was ready to live life to the full again.
The five-year-old turtle was released on the beach at Hondoq Bay near Qala on Thursday morning.
A large crowd, including Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana watched as he raced to get back into the sea.
Good luck Luca!
