President of Malta nominated for top Commonwealth role

The President of Malta has been nominated for a new role within the Commonwealth.

George Vella has been asked to act as patron of the new Commonwealth Centre of Excellence.

The proposal was suggested during a meeting in London with the Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland.

The centre, which will be based in Malta, will help to guide more than 30 small nations and territories within the Commonwealth.

Dr Vella, who was awarded with an honorary knighthood by The Queen last year, said he would consider Baroness Scotland’s offer and consult the Prime Minister.

The President and Mrs Vella are in London for a series of meetings as well as visiting Maltese patients in the city’s hospitals.
