Powercuts Hit Various Parts Of Malta Due To Heatwave

Last night, a widespread power outage affected multiple areas across Malta as the island’s first summer heatwave continues.

The power cuts, occurring throughout the night, left numerous residents unable to sleep or keep cool due to the lack of electricity to operate fans and air conditioners. From the north to the south of Malta, various localities, including Żebbuġ, Sliema, Naxxar, Mosta, Żurrieq, St Paul’s Bay, Siġġiewi, Luqa, Marsa, Qormi, Rabat, and Fgura, experienced the impact of the power cuts.

Enemalta, the power company, deployed multiple workers during the night to address the issue. While a few scheduled power cuts were planned, the outages also resulted from an overload on the electrical system. Sliema Mayor John Pillow explained, “Due to the extreme weather conditions and increased demand for electricity, several faults occurred in the high voltage infrastructure, affecting numerous consumers simultaneously.”

Although Enemalta’s teams are working diligently to resolve the problems, repairs may take some time. Despite the inconvenience, residents expressed gratitude for the commitment of Enemalta’s employees, who continue to work regardless of the weather conditions.

Some residents endured power shortages lasting up to eight hours, while others had their electricity restored after a few hours. As of this morning, certain areas, like parts of Naxxar, are still without power.
