Fury as new trees are stolen from Malta public garden

Thieves who stole trees planted by Maltese schoolchildren have been branded ‘a disgrace’ on social media.

Gzira’s mayor took to Facebook to vent his frustration after finding two saplings had been unceremoniously ripped from the earth in the town’s main public garden.

Conrad Borg Manche didn’t mince his words, describing the thieves as ‘stupid’ and ‘cruel’.

He said: ‘Why all this cruelty?

‘If they asked, I would have tried to source the trees but someone who pulls out a tree with a tag carrying the names of all the children who contributed to the project is a dumb ass and stupid.’

The trees were paid for and planted by children attending Gzira’s summer school.

They were planted in the public gardens next to the yacht marina just days ago.

Facebook users were quick to support the mayor with some calling for CCTV to be installed in the public gardens.

One man posted: ‘Install cameras and then name and shame. It is the only way these people ever become aware of what an utter disgrace they are!’

Another added: ‘Such ignorance. They might have got the trees but the children must have been so happy whilst planting them. So cruel.’
