One Out Of Four People In Malta Are At Risk Of Poverty

According to data published on Thursday by the NSO, one out of four people in Malta is at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

According to the National Statistics Office, 19.9% of the population in 2020 – or 100,712 people – are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to the EU’s statistics on income and living: a similar result to that of 2019.

Over the previous year, 16.9% of the population living in private households were assessed to be at risk of poverty, a quarter of which were aged 65 and over.

Besides looking at the ability to replace worn-out material goods such as furniture, appliances, or clothes, the statistic also measures leisurely activities like meeting with friends and family.

In 2020, roughly 5.1% of the population living in private households were evaluated to be severely deprived.
