We all made our fair share of sun mistakes and now that summer is almost over we cannot help but reminisce over the stupid mistakes (which don’t seem stupid at the time) we’ve made, like oh I don’t know NOT WEARING SUNSCREEEN!
Despite summer coming to an end, as Maltese we still love to go to the beach and bask in the sun till the very end; so I thought I’d be a bit of help to you and tell you all about what I decided to call ‘the granny remedies to sunburn’…you know before the after-sun existed. These would probably be things our nanna would tell us to do.
1. Skimmed Milk and Yoghurt
Okay, I have to admit this is one of the weirdest remedies I found out about. If you’re out of after sun or you just want to test if these things really work or not; try using yoghurt (which should be cold in the fridge) and spread it on your body to calm and hydrate the outer layer of your skin.
Otherwise, you can use skimmed milk, mix it with water and ice cubes and let their anti-inflammatory properties do the magic! Then simply rinse the burnt area with water.
Sometimes you can find the remedy in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. This vegetable (or fruit, let’s not start the fruit vs vegetable debate p-lease) contains a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. It helps in the reconstruction of the skin and relieves burns plus it also prevents blisters. Cut that baby up in slices and let it rest for a few minutes on the burnt areas.
After application – whip up some of your favourite salad ingredients, add those lovely tomatoes and enjoy a nice lunch!
3. Green Tea
Now this one I knew about! For areas on your body which are extremely sensitive like your eyelids, this remedy is perfect for sunburn. Let the green tea bags infuse, place them in a fridge with a container of ice cubes and after a couple of hours, use them to apply them on your burnt areas.
Let us know if you try out any of these remedies or if you have others which we do not know about! And kids, remember, ALWAYS put on sunscreen.
