Southbound traffic woes can start to finally ease as the Santa Lucija Underpass (also known as the Santa Lucija Tunnels) have been opened for traffic as of this morning.
These new tunnels will reduce congestion and traffic by 30% and will also save fuel costs for the hundreds of cars hailing from the southern part of the island, and who use the route on a daily basis. The tunnels will eliminate the use of the roundabout for cars coming from Marsa Junction and onto tal-Barrani and vice-versa.
The roundabout has been redesigned in such a way that it facilitates the exit routes for drivers who would be coming from Tarxien, Santa Lucija, and Paola. This project is also going to include a new jogging track nearby, a new pedestrian subway which is being rebuilt and which will be accessible even for those using bicycles.
A walking and cycling route is also being developed, providing a safe network between Luqa, Santa Lucija, Tarxien, Paola and Marsa.
