New Project Launched To Hand Out Books To Vulnerable Children

The Foundation for Social Welfare Services has launched an online charity project alongside Agenda Bookshop to hand out books to roughly 100 vulnerable children in low-income households.

The new literacy project – Books Make a Difference – comes in a bid to help these children enjoy better access to books, especially during the festive season.

Several studies indicate that kids who read leisurely every day develop a broader vocabulary, increase general knowledge, and a better grasp of other cultures. Not only does having books at home encourage children to read more, but is crucial for their future.

Unfortunately, some families in Malta are still struggling to provide even the bare necessities due to strict budgets, restricting vulnerable children’s access to reading books.

FSWS senior community development worker Jean-Paul Zammit Grech explained how books catalyse investment in the well-being, education, and general development of children. Through reading, children may expand their vocabulary and literacy; develop their imagination and creativity; expand their knowledge, and learn important values.

A small donation will go a long way to improve a child’s opportunities for future success,” he added as the foundation appeals to the public to help ensure that all vulnerable children in Malta have access to books in 2022.
