Known as “The Doctor”, Rossi finished tenth in his final race, but it didn’t matter to his adoring fans who’d made the trip to see him ride into the pits for one last time.

Over the course of his career, Rossi earned nine world titles, won 89 races, and finished on the podium 199 times.

Afterwards, Rossi stated that he thought it was going to be hard to retire and regretted not winning more titles in the early years of his career.

Renowned actors Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves, as well as athletes Lewis Hamilton, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal – among others – posted video messages in his honour.

Last month, Italy even sent Frecce Tricolori jets to salute Rossi, who received an award from the Italian foreign minister.
