Mason Greenwood Arrested & Suspended From Manchester United

Following photos published on social media by Mason Greenwood’s girlfriend Harriet Robson, Mason Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday. A series of shots of her beaten body, as well as an audio recording, were posted to her Instagram story. The posts have since been deleted.

Mason Will John Greenwood is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and the England national team. Last February, Greenwood entered a new long-term contract with the team which is set to run until 2025, with the option to extend by a further year.

Manchester United issued an initial statement confirming that it was aware of the  “images and allegations circulating on social media” and that it would “not make any further comment until the facts have been established,” but an update yesterday afternoon confirmed Greenwood’s suspension. Greater Manchester Authorities released a statement announcing that the Manchester United player had been detained while the police investigated the incident.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

“An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.”

“He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Greenwood and his girlfriend have reportedly been romantically involved since they attended Mersey School in Greater Manchester together, having split up just briefly on one occasion in 2020.

Writing on Twitter, Harriet Robson added: ‘I want to do this as a human being. Not as a ‘woman’ or a ‘woman in football.” Just as a human. Because, whilst I understand it needs investigating, it’s a hugely brave step, and one that might give others hope.’

The footballer has not publicly commented on the allegations at the time of writing, January 31.
