Man killed as gale force winds hit Malta

A man has died after a tree fell on his car during storms which have raged across Malta and Gozo.

The accident happened at about 6.30am on Saturday morning on Notabile Road in Mriehel.

The man, who was 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Malta Police said he was driving when gale force winds uprooted a tree which crashed on top of his silver Nissan.

The man’s wife, who was in the car with him at the time, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The 32-year-old woman, who lives in Mosta, is said to be in a ‘critical condition’ after the accident.

The road was closed to traffic for two hours.

A Malta Police spokesman told 89.7 Bay: ‘Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially in low lying areas because of the heavy rain.’

The Met Office warned of gale force winds and torrential rain on Saturday, ruining plans for Carnival celebrations in Valletta and Nadur.

Almost a month’s rain fell on Malta and Gozo in 24 hours, forecasters said.
