Man charged with murdering ex-girlfriend in Malta

A man has appeared in court in Valletta charged with the horrific murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Jelle Rijpma, 22, who works in the booming iGaming industry in Malta, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.

Shannon Mak was found dead in a street in Sta Venera on Friday morning, just hours after she had broken up with her boyfriend.

The court heard that she had been brutally stabbed and her throat had been slashed.

The 30-year-old victim had moved to Malta around three years ago from Monnickendam in the Netherlands.

She had worked in a wine bar in Valletta and lived in a flat Msida.

Her parents were present in the court room in Valletta as the harrowing evidence was read out.

Police said her body was discovered at around 6.15am on Friday between two cars in Mastrudaxxi Street.

The accused, also from the Netherlands, was remanded in custody by magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace.
