It’s only been a couple of months since we’ve heard of Maltese footballer Andre Schembri making a move to India to play with Chennaiyin FC.
Schembri, widely considered to be one of Malta’s best professional football players, said in Facebook post that after a great deal of thought, it’s the right time to announce his retirement and focus on other aspects of the game.
“This is a great time for all of us at Chennaiyin FC. We have reached another final, and we are totally focused on the most crucial match of the season.
After thirteen years dedicated to professional football, I feel it is the right time to announce my retirement and focus on other aspects of the game. I am proud to have had such a fantastic journey across Europe and Asia. It is not easy to leave such a small island like Malta to try and break through professional football oversees. That is why I’ll be forever thankful to the backroom staff, teammates, coaches, and all the teams I’ve played with for the faith they have shown in me. My immense gratitude goes to my family, my parents, and my closest friends for their continued encouragement and commitment to seeing me succeed, wherever the ball led me.
I am filled with many emotions right now – pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement to play the FINAL match of my career.
Chennaiyin, I will give my all to bring the cup back to where it belongs,” he writes, in a Facebook post.
Andre will be remembered by the Chennaiyin FC team as the man who broke the very long goal drought by scoring the 1st goal of this season. He has been nicknamed ‘The Maltese Falcon’, ‘Maltese King’ and ‘Seerum Schembri’.
A huge good luck to Andre on the final match of his career!
