Maltese driver jailed after pedestrian’s death in horror crash

A Maltese motorist has been jailed for six months for causing the death of a pensioner in Msida.

Joseph Piscopo, 36, from Floriana was also banned from the roads for five years.

The court in Valletta heard how he was driving his BMW on Marina Street in Msida when he struck 79-year-old Salvatore Attard.

The impact sent the pensioner from Pieta flying into the air.

The court heard that Mr Attard died of his injuries two days later in hospital.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke ruled that Piscopo had been speeding at the time of the accident in August 2016.

She said that the road surface was dry and there were no skid marks on the tarmac.

The magistrate also noted that the elderly pedestrian was three quarters of the way across the street when he was hit by the car.

After being sentenced to six months in prison, Piscopo was also ordered to pay €2,000 in court costs.
