Malta’s most notorious accident blackspot is to get a massive €1.6 million upgrade.
New safety measures have been promised for the killer crossroads linking High Ridge and Pembroke on St Andrew’s Road.
The junction has been the scene of several fatal accidents and horror crashes over the years.
Malta’s transport minister Ian Borg announced that the junction would be replaced by a new roundabout in a bid to reduce the risk of further accidents.
He said the project would make the road safer for drivers, pedestrians and residents in the area.
Work ‘is set to begin ‘within days’ .
The minister said the new roundabout should be completed before next summer.
A spokesman for Infrastructure Malta said: ‘During the first phases of the project Sir Adrian Dingli Street will be one way only.
‘The existing access to this road from St Andrew’s Road will be closed and diverted through Martin Luther King Road.
‘The St Andrew’s exits to Suffolk Street and the High Ridge and the residential areas will remain open during the initial work.
‘We will also build a new pavement along Sir Adrian Dingli Street to create a safer pedestrian passageway to St Clare College Pembroke Secondary School.’
