National Coach, Anthony Farrugia expressed great satisfaction at the end of his team’s commitments at the Men’s European U15 Water Polo Championships held in Loulé, Portugal. The team placed 13th at the European Junior.
Malta was drawn in Group B together with Italy, Spain, and Romania. Despite losing the first match against Italy with a score of 19 – 6, the team regrouped and improved their performance in the match against Romania, with the latter just tilting the score in the final minute of the match to clinch the victory.
In the third and final group match, with no points to their name, and knowing that they would be placed 4th in the group no matter the outcome of the match against Spain, the boys played their hearts out and achieved a respectable result despite losing the game.
Malta’s next match was against Georgia who placed 4th in Group D. The team’s efforts were finally rewarded when they hammered their opponents 21-8 to clinch their first victory. This ensured Malta avoiding 15th Place and they went on to play France in the 13th/14th ranking match.
The team kept it together and made history by winning two matches at this prestigious event and earning 13th place in Europe!
Joe Caruana Curran, ASA President, and LEN Bureau Liaison at these European Championships expressed his great satisfaction for this historic result which is hopefully the first of a number of future positive achievements our various water polo teams will be accomplishing!
